Chapter 227 and the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation work together to provide timely financial assistance to veterans and their families throughout Northern Virginia.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227 has served veterans and their families in Northern Virginia since 1985.
In 2025, the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVVF) was created as an independent 501(c)(3) charitable organization to expand the resources available for that work and strengthen the ability to respond when veterans face urgent financial hardship.
Chapter 227 is a tax-exempt veterans organization under Section 501(c)(19) of the Internal Revenue Code. The two organizations are legally independent, but work in close partnership toward the same purpose:

501(c)(19) Veterans Organization
Chapter 227 carries out the veteran-assistance mission.
- Receive requests for assistance
- Review and verify the need
- Approve appropriate grants
- Arrange payment directly to creditors or service providers
- Work to resolve urgent needs quickly
NVVVF
501(c)(3) Charitable Foundation
NVVVF builds the financial resources that make that assistance possible.
- Raises charitable contributions
- Provides funds for veteran financial assistance
- Supports Chapter 227’s ability to respond to urgent veteran needs
- Directs donated resources toward veteran support
How the Partnership Works
Two Tracks. One Purpose.
Track 1 — Charitable Funding
NVVVF raises charitable contributions to build and maintain the pool of funds available for veteran assistance.
Donations are not tied to individual veteran cases.
NVVVF funds support Chapter 227’s approved veteran assistance.
NVVVF may provide veteran-assistance funding to Chapter 227 periodically or in response to Chapter funding needs. Those funds are restricted to veteran assistance and are not used for Chapter 227 operating expenses.
Track 2 — Veteran Assistance
Chapter 227 receives requests for assistance, verifies the need, determines appropriate support and arranges payment directly to the landlord, utility company, repair facility or other creditor or service provider.

Chapter 227 covers NVVVF’s operating expenses so Foundation donations can be devoted to veteran assistance.
NVVVF funds are never used for Chapter 227 operating expenses.

Assistance is not limited to Vietnam veterans.
48 Hours
Goal: Within 48 Hours
Once an urgent request has been received and verified, Chapter 227’s goal is to act within 48 hours.
Local decision-making and a streamlined process help prevent temporary hardship from becoming a lasting crisis.
Veterans Helping Veterans
The partnership works because it combines charitable resources with decades of experience serving veterans.
An overdue rent payment, utility shutoff, unexpected vehicle repair or other emergency can quickly create additional problems for a veteran or family.
Chapter 227’s role is practical:

It is a modern extension of the principle that has guided the Chapter since 1985:
