Need Financial Assistance?
Start With One of Our Referral Partners
If you are a veteran or immediate family member experiencing a temporary financial hardship, help may be available.
Chapter 227 administers an emergency financial assistance program supported by the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation. Requests begin with one of our trusted veteran-service referral partners rather than with NVVVF or Chapter 227 directly.
A Resource Specialist or Veterans Service Officer will work with the veteran or family to understand the circumstances, verify eligibility and immediate needs, identify other resources that may be available, and—when appropriate—prepare an electronic referral for Chapter 227.
Contact a Referral Partner
A veteran-service professional reviews the circumstances and helps determine what assistance may be appropriate.
Referral to Chapter 227
When emergency financial assistance is recommended, the referral partner prepares a referral package and submits it electronically to Chapter 227.
Review & Payment
Chapter 227 reviews the request and supporting documentation. When assistance is approved, payment is generally made directly to the landlord, mortgage company, utility provider, vehicle lender, repair facility, medical provider or other creditor.
Goal: Within 48 Hours
Most emergency requests are processed within 48 hours after Chapter 227 receives a complete referral package.

What Should I Have Available?
Your referral partner may ask for proof of military service, such as a DD-214, information about household finances, documentation of the financial hardship, and information about the creditor or provider that needs to be paid. Your referral partner will guide you through what is needed.
Receiving VA disability compensation, Social Security, military retirement, pension income or wages does not automatically disqualify a veteran from consideration.
